Mission Statement

Greyhound Pets of America Inc. East Texas Chapter is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to finding caring and responsible homes for retired racing greyhounds.  We take a neutral stand on the greyhound racing industry and stress the importance of spaying and neutering.  Our aim is to raise public awareness on what excellent, loving pets these noble dogs make and that they are available for adoption to qualified homes.

About Greyhounds

Greyhounds adopted through the GPA program usually range from 18 months to 5 years of age.  The life expectancy of ex-racers is 12 or more years.  Retired racers are very intelligent, adaptable dogs who fit easily into their new home environment following a brief adjustment period.  They are eager to please and respond positively to any attention given to them;  they quickly become attached to their new family.

The majority of retired track greyhounds are quiet. clean, good-natured and gentle dogs that adapt and get along with children and other animals.  They do not require a great deal of space and are usually quite content to curl up on a soft dog bed or even your sofa.

A greyhound requires about he same amount of exercise as any dog their size.  They even make great apartment dogs if you are willing to walk them a few times a day to let them relieve themselves.

Greyhounds can never be let off-leash in an unenclosed area for the are sight hounds and may unexpectedly chase a squirrel, another dog, a cat, a plastic bag blowing down the street, or even a car.

Adoption

We screen our potential adopters through a completed adoption application, phone or in-person interview and a home visit.  GPA\East Texas adopts to the Arklatex area.  Adoption outside of our area will be on a case-by-case basis.  Our adoption fee of $200 covers spay/neuter, vaccinations, heartworm test, martingale collar and leash, greyhound muzzle and an ongoing support system from our volunteers.

How you can help

If you are unable to adopt a greyhound, you can still help by making a tax-deductible donation to help us cover medical, supply and food expenses, etc.  Please make checks payable to Greyhound Pets of America/East Texas and mail to  P.O. Box 7485, Texarkana, TX 75505.
